My name is Amanda Rey, and I, along with a small but dedicated team of volunteers in NWA, the River Valley, as well as Central AR, are in the midst of planning a charity event that will ultimately provide awareness for the Arkansas Emergency Disaster Relief Fund on an annual basis. Volunteers have been working diligently to repair and rebuild since the deadly tornado on May 25 that ripped through the small communities of Denning, Etna, Altus and Clarksville. Presently, it seems that attention, volunteer efforts and funding to the affected area have dwindled while costs and need for more of the aforementioned continues to rise.

2 months ago, our neighbors faced ravaging storms that swept through in the middle of the night and damaged their property beyond belief. To this day, the amount of debris in addition to new growth is overwhelming clean-up crews, some of which consist mostly of churches filled with teenagers on day trips.

How can you help?
Your donations will help us raise the critical dollars to help our neighbors rebuild the homes and property lost in catastrophic natural disasters.

Still needed in our state: weed eaters, work gloves, air conditioners, cots for the out-of-town volunteer workers, electrolyte replacement drinks for volunteers working in extreme temperatures, as well as continued volunteer response.

Fayetteville Sound Project Launches

Big thanks to Sound Warehouse and the Fayetteville Public Library who are instrumental in getting the new “Local Music” section going in the library’s CD collection.

Sound Warehouse donated the CDs and Fayetteville Public Library helped us make sure that $10 is being paid for each CD from a local artist. CEAG wants to set the model that artists should always be paid a fair rate for their work.

Laura Speer, director of library services, put the CDs out last week and already there are only three left out of the initial 17 in the collection. That sounds like success to me.

We hope to make the second set of 20 available in the coming week or so.

Also, we are looking for digital copies of photos you might have of bands and shows from Fayetteville’s past. This might be incorporated in the Fayetteville documentary film project. Also we need our local music scholars to step forward to help write a one-page document on That Fayetteville Sound.

This is all building toward a Aug. 28 show at the Fayetteville Public Library that will feature a number of local bands.

About Rosen Method Movement

Rosen Method movement classes are fun and easy!

Set to music, these easy, unhurried movements are designed to improve alignment and flexibility. They also increase range of motion, ease of breathing, and deepen awareness of the body. These movements are done individually as well as in a circle or with partners.

Marion Rosen developed this form of exercise to prevent physical difficulties before they arise and to help her clients feel better and age gracefully. The Movement teacher takes the students in the class through a series of exercises designed to use all the joints, especially those not used in day-to-day life, to make sure the synovial fluid continues to lubricate them. These movements may be adapted to those who experience pain or have physical limitations.

Rosen movement offers a vision of health and well-being that enables us to live openly and fully. It has achieved international recognition for its demonstrated ability to alleviate muscular tension and pain, in addition to improving posture, flexibility and self-esteem. Rosen movement classes facilitate pleasure and ease in movement for people of all ages and walks of life. Classes are preventive as well as restorative. The movements open the chest and free the diaphragm so oxygen can circulate freely to all the tissues of the body. Circulation is increased in all joints through loosening the muscles as they are moved through their available range of motion. The addition of music makes the movements more like dancing, and thus more complex and fun, allowing the development of greater balance and coordination. Rosen Method movement creates the experience of relaxation and well-being in action. Participants find new vitality, joy, and ease in their bodies.

Hey ladies! This is a program being offered by one of my dearest friends (we've known one another since 2nd grade). I'm planning on being part of the virtual class and wanted to share the opportunity with the rest of the Professional Women's Network. Program Dates: May 1st- May 29th, 2011

Why Meditate and Why This Program?
Scenario 1: The phone is incessantly ringing, you have 83 unanswered emails in your Outlook box, you worked 60 hours this week and it's only Wednesday, although you are 34, if someone just saw your blood pressure results, they'd think you were 72...

Scenario 2: Life is fun and busy, and you've tried to make time for meditation a few times a week, but the laundry needs to get done, the trash needs to go out, Modern Family is coming on shortly--all of which pushes out the time for meditation...

Scenario 3: You've heard about this meditation thing, you've tried closing your eyes once, but that didn't go well. You feel inspired, but are not sure how to start....

Whether you need to figure out how to deal with stress, you need help with a disciplined practice and/or you are just curious, the focus of this program is to help you with all of these things through beginning a meditation practice. Starting and sustaining a meditation practice is a difficult thing when there are a lot of competing messages and activities for our attention: think Times Square in our minds. The four weeks will be about developing awareness and consciousness by creating a meditative practice that helps you see/ manage what's going on inside and out.

Science, Spirituality and Meditation
If you need hard proof, there is a pool of scientific evidence demonstrating the outcomes of meditation. Science says that a few minutes a day has profound impacts on participants' states of mind. Meditation reduces the experience of pain in novice meditators. Meditation helps improve cognitive skills in beginning meditators. Click on the hyperlink for the articles. While there are spiritual aims of meditation, our focus is to simply quiet the mind. However, I will incorporate both spiritual and secular philosophers to illustrate points along the way.

Practice Makes Perfect
As with anything, sitting takes practice. Practice take time. Time is precious thing. Meditation/mindfulness, while important to sit for a few minutes, can take place out in the world when we are doing mundane things like walking to the grocery store. Even if you work 80 hours a week, there's room for practice, I promise.

What's Involved?
The commitment would involve the following:

Sitting 3-5 minutes everyday on your own (during the program, I'll direct you to an online guided meditation or send you music to help with your practice);
Engaging in one exercise per week;
Responding once a week to an email to me as a reflection exercise (how many times you meditated, the quality of the meditation, reflection on the exercise, etc.) It can be as involved or brief as works for you.;
$20 one time charge; and,
Filling out an anonymous survey at the end of the program.

The Details
Every Sunday, starting May 1st, I'll send an email with helpful instruction, a short reading and an exercise. During the week, you will meditate for 3-5 minutes a day and would work on the exercise when out and about in the world with the idea to bring a state of mindfulness to your everyday experiences and respond to an email I'll send out on Friday.

Apple Seeds Organizational Goals:

The Apples in the Classroom program combines nutrition education with experiential learning about food and agriculture to help elementary school students in Northwest Arkansas make nutritious food choices and form lifelong healthy eating habits. Apple Seeds is currently partnering with Leverett Elementary School in Fayetteville to develop a curriculum and activities that will improve students' knowledge about food and its impacts on their lives, and assist teachers in meeting Arkansas state educational requirements. Once the framework and tools for this program are developed at Leverett Elementary, Apple Seeds will offer a similar program to other elementary schools in Northwest Arkansas. The Apples in the Classroom program will be tailored to the interests and environment of each school community.

The organization also coordinates Cooking Classes and Garden Clubs at elementary schools.

About the Garden

Botanical Garden of the Ozarks (Garden) opened in October 2007. The first phase of construction consists of nine themed gardens and a timber-frame multipurpose building on 9 acres of 90 acres available for development. The aesthetic of the Garden reflects the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Ozarks. From its opening, the Garden focused on educational programs.

In 2009, the Garden welcomed 35,000 visitors, 194 volunteers who contributed 6800 hours of service and had 1,800 members join. The Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks(BGSO), a non-profit organization, employs seven full-time staff members to operate the Garden, programs and volunteers.

About the job

The Executive Director (ED) cultivates and develops financial support of the Garden, acts as a liaison with the Board, staff and volunteers, He/she develops a roadmap of further Garden development.

The successful candidate is an effective communicator, experienced fundraiser and efficient business manager. This is an opportunity for an energetic, charismatic individual to shape the future of a highly-regarded garden.

Requirements

· A bachelor’s degree plus an advanced degree or equivalent professional experience.

· At least 4 years of experience in non-profit administration, preferably in public horticulture.

· Strong management skills.

Executive Director Job Description

The Executive Director (ED) of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks (Garden), a non-profit organization, is responsible for fund raising, donor cultivation, marketing, community outreach, programming, management of the existing gardens and execution of the master plan.

The ED is instrumental in implementing the goals outlined by the BGSO Board: three-year strategic plan, including achieving financial sustainability, developing educational programming, growing Garden visits and creating a roadmap for garden expansion into the undeveloped 90 acres.

The Executive Director’s responsibilities include:

1. Fundraising/Donor Cultivation. The ED’s number one priority is grant writing, fundraising and major donor cultivation. He/she is expected to devote a majority of his/her time to fundraising and grant writing. The ED reports the specifics, including dollar amounts arising from his/her fundraising and donor cultivation and of time spent each month to the Executive Committee.

With the support of the Communications/Education Coordinator and the Board members, the ED is responsible for leading all fundraising efforts. This includes cultivating new members and major donors in addition to building relationships with public granting institutions and family foundations. The ED manages the bookkeeper/membership coordinator and oversees fiscal responsibilities, grants management and funds tracking and reporting.

ED’s fundraising includes meeting a $250,000 matching grant through unrestricted funds in the first three years of his/her contract through individual gifts, grants and earned revenue. In addition, he/she will lead an anticipated $4 million capital campaign to complete Phase 2 of the Master Plan.

2. Administration. The ED manages day-to-day Garden operations, manages the budget, funds allocation, sustainability and cost savings ideas, staff direction (including performance reviews), correspondence, and welcomes visitors. He/she hires, disciplines and terminates staff. The ED holds staff meetings and maintains effective staff, board and volunteer communications.

3. Site Development and Maintenance. With the support of the Director of Operations, the ED manages the expansion of the Garden envisioned in the Master Plan. These activities include coordinating funds, staff, Board, contractors, designers, and volunteers. He/she also supervises the Director of Garden Design/Management, who manages the maintenance of the existing gardens and structures as needed and as directed by the Board.

4. Marketing and Community Outreach. The ED represents the Garden regionally and nationally to broaden its exposure, publicize its mission and develop support for the it’s goals. He/she accepts that these opportunities occur outside normal working hours.

5. Programs. With staff and volunteer collaboration, the ED develops and schedules the educational and outreach programs featuring adult and child focused workshops, conferences, school presentations, events, special programs and collaboration with other gardening and civic organizations.

6. Board Collaboration and Communication. The Board expects the ED to be a self-starter and collaborates with the Board members, volunteers, donors and members. He/she works with and recommends to Committee Chairs strategies, priorities and policies for the Garden’s strategic direction as approved by the Board of Directors. The ED notifies the Executive Committee of financial, contractual and personnel decisions.

The ED performs these duties and others assigned by the President and Executive Committee.

Independents Week is a national event organized by the American Independent Business Alliance, our parent organization. During that week, independent business alliances across the country are encouraged to celebrate their local businesses and raise awareness within the community about how important local business is for a healthy economy.

FIBA is putting together press releases for the local media and a flyer/bag stuffer for our members to pass along to their customers. We are also putting together a list of members running specials or discounts for that week. The flyer and press releases will contain the web address for the complete listing of specials as well as our member list. The specials list will be organized in a way that anyone can easily print it themselves for reference.

Keep in mind that Bikes, Babes, and Bling will be the 1st-3rd and this flyer can be a means to bring participants into those businesses located away from Dickson St. We especially ask members along Dickson St to pass out the flyer during Bikes, Babes, and Bling in order to help our other members draw in some customers during the bike rally. We will do something similar during the large fall rally.

Documentary on environmentally-damaging gas 'fracturing' Tuesday night

Tomorrow, Tuesday 16 March, the documentary film "Split Estate" will be shown at the University of Arkansas Law School Courtroom (upstairs) at 6:00 pm. Come join area leaders and experts for the screening and informative discussion of the environmental impact of gas drilling and dumping of associated hazardous wastes across north-central Arkansas.

This hour-long documentary shows how the type of drilling used here (called hydraulic fracturing, or hydro-fracking) endangers water wells and drinking water sources over a wide area of the state. This technique is currently being used to extract gas beneath some of our state parks and wildlife areas, and federally-owned national forests.

Artist Reception – I. M. Spa hosts reception for Angela Peace Photography. Angela Peace is an accomplished photographer whose joy in art comes in the form of risking life and limb to get to the most untouched, beautiful places and bringing them to us in the form of photography. Her formal education is in law, business, and computer information systems. She has taught graphic arts and web design at community colleges all over Northwest Arkansas. She has studied at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, as well as spent extensive time with Tim Ernst, hiking in the woods and catching nature in her photography. Angela can be seen almost every weekend around Northwest Arkansas with a kayak on her car heading to a remote location to get the good shots.

The fall is approaching and things seem to be getting busier and busier. I am returning from maternity leave soon, a little sooner than expected. I have mixed emotions about this, of course. When I leave the kids for just a few hours now, I feel a sense of emptiness without them and want to rush home to be with them. Going back to work will be tough, but I am also looking forward to the hustle and bustle again.

August's member meeting was a great success, in my opinion. We had just over 20 members attend and working moms from many different stages in life and career came. I met a lot of new working moms and I believe one of our members found a new job from attending the lunch.

The September lunch is scheduled for Friday, September 25th @ 12:00 pm @ The Retail Training Academy in Bentonville. It is located across from the Walmart home office. We will use this time to meet fellow members, reveal our new website and how it will work for you (THANK YOU ROCKFISH INTERACTIVE!), and we will also be providing you with some ideas on things to do in the community with your family after-hours or on weekends. Many of you expressed an interest in learning what companies and businesses had "working mom friendly hours", so we have asked a couple of local chambers to come in and provide some resources to us.

We will have a local caterer bring in food (http://www.lesliescatering.com/) to make it easy to meet and eat. The optional menu includes a baked potato bar, chili, salad, brownies, and tea for approximately $13. If you plan on attending the meeting and eating lunch, please let me know so that we can give the caterer an idea of a head count.

I am excited to see everyone again. Now that our membership is growing, we will soon be providing additional resources for members and member companies. Stay tuned!

This summer I have:
